on tuesday, we'll be talking gun control. vice president biden will give the president his gun control recommendati recommendations. last month obama had vowed to prevent future shootings like nowtown. expected recommendations include all kind of things. universal background checks and a possible ban on assault weapons. we'll see if that happens on tuesday. also on tuesday, an expected vote on about $50 billion of superstorm sandy relief money. congress approved a $9.7 billion package, but, certainly, much more needs to be done here. and on sunday, looking all the way ahead to the end of the week. president obama's inauguration on noon at sunday. this is a private swearing in before the big festivities on monday. i will be in washington, d.c., all weekend covering it and covering all the celebrations, as well. it will all be live right here on cnn. >>> and we mentioned newtown and as that one month mark from the shooting at newtown approaches, the community is reflecting on the tragedy. cnn's national correspondent susan candiotti has more. >> good morning, randi. wounds remain fresh h

, january 20th, of course, the second term of president obama and vice president biden is now about to begin. joining us once again with a little bit more perspective is professor dr. alan lichtman. one of the things we were talking about is that, you know, to a certain extent in a president's second term, you would think there would be a certain amount of freedom. they don't have to worry about getting re-elected, but you've written that sometimes second terms aren't exactly kind to incumbents. >> second terms have been tough. george w. bush left with the economy melting down and lowest approval ratings practically in history for a president. bill clinton was impeached. richard nixon resigned his office. dwight eisenhower faced the humiliation of sputnik and the u2 affair. that said, you can accomplish things in your second term. franklin roosevelt got the fair labor standards act that gave us minimum wage and maximum hours. ronald reagan had the big breakthroughs with the soviet union. but it's tough. here's where i think obama can accomplish something in the second term, despite the obsta

the next four years extremely difficult from a governing standpoint. let's talk about it with chris wilson, a republican consultant, former executive director of the texas republican party and the president of new heights communications. kristi, to you first. candidate obama in 2008 promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. that hasn't happened. how about by the end of his second? >> well, john, i think what's important to remember is that as president obama is starting his second term, he's doing so in a remarkably strong position with high approval ratings and a great record in his first term. when he started, as we all know, the economy was in the ditch. he was able to successfully get us out of that at the point where last week the u.s. stocks closed at their highest level in five years and was able to pass historic health care legislation. by contrast, republicans have their ratings in the toilet. what that means is that there's probably -- it's going to bode well for their ability to compromise with him and for the president to get a second term agenda passed.
